Too Big!
The first two big Ling Cod landed today were over the 40" max size!
The second week of May had some tough days yielding only one or two Ling Cod and even getting skunked one day. Fishing has been good for the last two weeks of May with limits or near limits of Ling Cod plus a few Rockfish, occasional Cabezon and many many Flounder. Today May 29th we landed 6 keeper size Ling, 2 more over the 40" maximum size allowed, 1 under the 26" minimum and 3 or 4 Rockfish released as well as the usual 30+ Flounder only 1 lb each.

Big Bottom Fish

The Ling Cod Fishing has been good and the fish are big. Also pictured is a Cabezon, the ugliest fish in the west. These photos are all from May 2006. Ling Cod season lasts until June 15th and Salmon opens in limited areas June 1st with the better Salmon opportunity and more water open beginning July 1st.

Ling Cod Opening
My favorite Pyro Miner from Wyoming holds up a nice winter Blackmouth from mid-April. The Salmon fishing was very slow the last week of April but still producing of few of these gems. Look for the monster Ling Cod to be active during the opening weeks of the season begining May 1st.

Late Winter Blackmouth
John and Zach were visiting from Kansas Tuesday when they landed a couple of nice winter Blackmouth and realized they wern't in Kansas anymore Toto. The party of four finished with 3 keepers and released two salmon under the 22" size limit. They also lost two nice sized Salmon and a size 1 dodger after losing long battles to the Seals. Winter Salmon Season remains open through April. Ling Cod will open May 1st and Salmon will re-open in June for C&R and Salmon harvest July 1st.

Fish getting bigger
The fishing holds up this week as the winter blackmouth Salmon fishery continues to produce at least one keeper per person. the average fish is bigger now than it has been all winter as shown by Max G holding up a 16 lb Chinook caught at Double Bluff.

Nice fish North

Monday Feb 6 a different world of calm 5 mph wind and sunshine has blessed this morning after the 50 mph wind and rain Sat had cancelled all charters. The immediate Seattle area has closed to Salmon until June so we head north to Possesion Bar on the SW corner of Whidbey Island in search of Chinook Salmon at possibly the most consistent winter Salmon hole in Puget Sound. The first hour we see lots of birds and a pod of Dahl's Porpoise feeding on krill high in the water collumn. While trolling two miles near the bottom around the 120 ft contour we see little signs of seals or salmon and no bites. The captain makes an executive decision to take this wildlife tour farther northwest to Pt no Point. Hight tide is here and this spot fishes best on an ebb. Early on the first pass.. Fish Fish! The port rod gets a strike, but after 2 hours of soaking up the beauty of our surroundings we are too relaxed to react in time.Thinking...we needed that one, we get our lines back out. We troll for nearly 40 minutes and the catpain says "last pass and then we'll make a move if we don't... Fish Fish Fish!" the port rod starts bouncing pretty good and Joe SR is ready this time."he's not fighting much". "keep the pressure on, he'll fight when he comes up" assures the captain. "woah! I guess so" and after a few tugs we net a nice 25" juvenile King salmon or "Blackmouth". The middle line!! and as we celebrate getting the skunk out we miss another fish. Ok let's get em down. It wasn't long before the port line sarts bouncing. The young Pirelli grabs the pole and sets the hook. " he's heavy" he's taking line". "he will tire", "He's still taking line" "OK" let's pull in the other lines and back on him" after a few more good tugs Joseph works up a nice 30" fish going 10 lbs broad and silver with a dark green back and purple hue."Now thats a nice fish". Even the guide notes the beauty of this catch. A couple more fat fish 7 to 9 lbs were landed before we started our journey back to the marina 15 nautical mies away over calm shimmering seas to divy up some fillets among the deserving anglers.

Still good
Although I have been slack in posting, the Salmon fishing has remained good on trips in Dec and Jan. We have not had to travel more than 4 miles to get good action since November. Saturday before the Seahawks won The NFC championship was one of the tougher days. We started at Four Mile Rock with only two salmon of 15 and 20 inches released in nearly an hour of fishing. We then moved back to Shilshole Bay and had a bit better action landing 4 "keepers" well over the 22" size limit and releasing another dozen Salmon that were at or under the size limit. The Chinook Salmon were found right near the bottom in 110 to 125 feet of water and caught on white plastic squid 22" behind a size 1 dodger. Below Three handsome generations keep 4 handsome fish. Captain Carl decides to go catch one himself which took about 5 minutes to land and about 5 minutes to try and snap the picture himself.
