Good Winter Fishing

Wow! What a consistently good winter salmon season we are having this year. We have landed at least 4 keeper Chinook Salmon (Blackmouth over the 22” min size limit) every trip Dec 1- Jan 12 (the time of this posting). Fishing looks very promising going forward. We are currently fishing area 10 which closes Jan 30th but then Area 9 will open Feb. 1st giving us access to some of our favorite areas such as Point no Point and Possession bar known for larger size fish like the 19 lb winter Blackmouth we caught Nov 28 at Point No Point just before it closed Nov 30.  On Saturday 3 buddies from OK landed 6 keepers and around 40 Salmon under the 22” size limit which kept us very busy to say the least. Pictured are the 4 fish we kept.

Good Winter Fishing

We have experienced very hot fishing for at least an hour or two of every trip this winter. It usually comes in bunches and usually near a tide change. The fishing has been so active that we are expecting this winter Salmon season to hold up strong through the April 15th closure of Marine Area 9 in Puget Sound. Currently we are fishing in Marine Area 10 open until Jan 31st. There were several wind cancellations in early November but since then the water has been very fishable. On days we can get out we have experienced easy limits on most days and had to work a bit harder on one or two days but have brought back plenty of fish every trip! Most days the wind waves are 1 foot or less and there are no swells. Bundle up and join us for a refreshing day on the water with beautifull views of snowy mountains, wildlife and plenty of fish to go around for those willing to put in 6 to 7 hours of boating and fishing.

Pictured is Peter of the Netherlands with a rare 19 lb winter Blackmouth taken at Pt No Pt last week and the Patillo party from Chicago with some nice fish 5 to 10 lbs.

Action !
MAN! There has been a ton of action lately but the average fish is only about 14". We are getting a couple of keeper Chinook Salmon (Blackmouth) over the 22" size limit every trip and releasing 30 to 40 that are 12 to 22". The good news is that these 20" fish will put on weight fast and some other larger fish should move in as well as the addition of more water opening up here Nov 1st so look for the number of keepers to improve as the holidays aproach. The winter Blackmouth season is underway and only looks to improve through the winter and into spring as all these juveniles grow up. There is still room for Thanksgiving weekend at the time of this posting

slowing down
The fishing for Silvers (Coho Salmon) has slowed dowm the last week but we are still getting a few of these gems a day, most going 8 to 12 lbs. One of the struggles lately is the aggressive 10" baby Salmon migrating out to sea. We end up releasing alot of these "shakers" which cuts into "wet line time" to target the larger fish. So still lots of action but only a few keepers. The good news is we havn't been skunked! Quick, knock on wood. Oct 16 will open for Chinook salmon and we expect some decent action from them and still plenty of dates open for the "winter Blackmouth" Season (juvenile Chinook salmon) which peak in Nov-Jan.

Big Silvers

Tuesday we landed a limit of 8 Silvers (Coho Salmon) for 4 people by 9:30 am and 5 of those fish were over 10 lbs. We also released a few Chinook (not in season until Oct 16th) and lost a few nice Silvers right at the boat. They tend to freak out a bit when they get near the boat. It looks like this run of larger Coho Salmon are starting to come in a little stronger.

Silvers
I haven't posted a report in awhile as we are in the peak season and I'm working every day. The limits of resident Silvers (Coho Salmon lasted in to early-mid August. Since then we have been scratching for 5 to 7 keeper Silvers for 4 or 5 people. Thursday morning the fishery lit up for 25 hook ups and 12 fish landed up to 11 lbs but then on Friday we struggled again so it seems safe to say this run of adult ocean run Coho are late and should be peaking in late Sept into October. Chinook Salmon fishing will open on October 16th.

Heating Up
Fishing has been hot in the mornings for 4 to 6 lb Coho Salmon and fair to good in the afternoon south of Jefferson Head with early limits and extra fish released on every morning trip for the last 9 days. The afternoon trips are getting about 4 to 8 keeper Coho Salmon for 4 people. This morning we also landed 3 King salmon 12 to 20 lbs and released all 3 as required by current regulations in the area wer'e fishing. Look for the Coho (Silvers) to start packing on some weight and for larger ocean run Coho moving into Puget Sound. King Salmon will peak in mid August and the Largest Coho salmon usually peak around mid-September and run into October. October 16 will open for King Salmon and we expect a mix of resident Kings, Coho and Chum Salmon through the fall and resident King Salmon through winter.

Resident Coho
Honestly most of the fish we are catching this week are 19 to 22 inch long resident Coho Salmon and lots of them. There are few big King Salmon starting to trickle in and there will be alot more by mid-July. Most of our trips this summer will be in "marine area 10" where the fishing is best but the King Salmon must be released. Fishing this area gives us 5 to 10 times the action we get in "marine area 11" and we can still take home 2 Coho per person. The Coho Salmon (Silvers) will continue to pack on the weight until they reach up to 15 lbs or more by late September.
