Better Late Than never

Big Kings best in late July and early August like this whopper caught July 30. Pinks came on strong in late August and the Silvers(Coho Salmon) in Mid September. Look for fishing to slow for Coho and pick up for winter Kings (Blackmouth) which opens October 1st and remains open into April.

Early Silvers
Were having decent action from early Silvers (Coho Salmon) ranging 2 to 4 lbs and a few Kings up to 20 lbs. These Silvers will grow about 1 lb every 2 or 3 weeks and King Salmon runs should strengthen as we aproach the July 16th opener for Kings. This week we have brought back limits or near limits of 2 Salmon per person daily. Expect fishing to strengthen as the Pink Salmon runs combine with the Silvers and kings as we head into August. Adult Silvers 7 to 12 lbs should be showing in late August and September.

Fishing has Improved

After a good summer King Season we had slow fishing for Silvers in September and a slow start to the winter blackmouth season this fall of 2010. Finally some decent numbers of fish are starting to show and the average size "Blackmouth" (juvenile King Salmon) is larger than most yost years. Most keepers seem to be in the range of 7 to 12 lbs which are about 26 to 33 inches in length with some larger and some smaller. There are plenty of dates available for this winter fishery and most boats are going out below capacity leaving plenty of elbow room. Give us a call, text or email if you have any questions or would like to book a date.

Beauties
These beauties came from Scatchet head on south Whidbey Island in late may 2010. The two Lingcod and two Cabezon however were quite ugly, yes one was even blue which is very common with Lingcod. We have been averaging close to one Lingcod, 10 Flounder and an occasional Cabezon per person

Humpies, Silvers and Kings

The Pinks are in (Humpies), Ocean run Coho (Silvers) are starting to show and there are still a few Kings Salmon around. Fin clipped Kings can still be kept through August 31st.  I expect the Pink run to last through the end of August along with some Coho and then we will be focusing almost exclusively on Coho in September as run usually reaches its peak in mid to late September. October 1st marks the opening of the winter King salmon season which is slated to remain open through April 2010.

It has been a mad dash in and out of the marina to run two trips a day with limits of 4 salmon in the morning and limits or near limits for the afternoon groups. That’s right. The limit is four for Pink salmon. Only two of your 4 fish retained may be Kings or Silvers. Check out www.fishingseattle.com/page5.html for a chart of the Salmon seasons. Most other times the limit is 2 Salmon per person. The huge Lingcod opens next May 1st, 2010 and will likeley remain open for 6 weeks. Please plan ahead you would like to participate in Lingcod fishing.

Lingcod as usual

As is typical for May, we have been catching some nice Lingcod every trip out. This fishery is avilable only through June 15th. The end of June will be Salmon and Flounder Combo trips as Salmon must be released until July 1st but we can keep 10 Flounder per person. Salmon opens July 1st for 2 Coho Salmon per person, release all Kings until July 16th. July 16 to August 30 we will be allowed to keep Kings of hatchery origon identified by the missing adipose fin on about 70% of all adult Kings landed. In addition to the daily bag limit of 2 salmon per person we will be allowed to take 2 more Pink Salmon per person. We might expect to see a substantial number of Pink Salmon mid August to early September. September will also mark the peak of the Coho Salmon run (Silvers).

Good Action in Area 9

This father and son team from Olympia, Washington landed 5 “keeper size” Blackmouth (juvenile King Salmon) 22 to 28 inches in length on their fishing trip this week. We departed from Seattle and fished near Pilot Point which is north of Kingston. The action came in about 130 feet of water right near bottom on size 1 dodgers and green glow squids. They released another dozen or more that were just under the size limit. This action is pretty typical of what you can expect for late winter Blackmouth in area 9 Feb through April although larger fish are caught some days going 32 inches or more and weighing up to 16 lbs. We are only getting out fishing about two days a week in February as business is typically slow this time of year even when fishing is good.

Good Winter Fishing

We have been experiencing some good consistent winter Blackmouth fishing. For over a month now we have continued to see these nice 3 year old King Salmon "keepers" averaging about 8 to 9 lbs and 29 inches. We are also seeing a high number of "shaker" Salmon under the 22" size limit providing lots of additional action. We will continue to catch these fish until mid to late April with Dec Jan and Feb usually being the peak. May 1st will mark the opening of Ling Cod Season. One very succesful recent afternoon trip we landed 7 keeper size Salmon in 2 hours last Friday afternoon pictured below. We don't usually expect to catch that many keepers on such a short trip but it worked that day! Most trips lately are yielding 4 to 6 keepers and 20 or more "shakers" for a normal 6 hour trip.
