Salmon Opens Up!

Aussie Olive farmer Paul Miller released this oversize Ling Cod that he caught less than 5 minutes from our slip at the marina!! The maximum size that you can keep is 40 inches and this fish was about 43 inches and over 30 lbs. This large Ling Cod dined on a whole, live Flounder!

Now that Ling Cod season is over, we are out playing with salmon and releasing a mix of Coho (Silver) and Chinook (King) salmon.

On July 1st we can start keeping 2 Salmon per person. Until then we have to release the salmon but we can catch and keep 10 Flounder per person.

best winter blackmouth

Are the rivers out of shape? Who cares!! Winter Steelhead is not the only game in town when it comes to northwest winter game fishing. The Blackmouth (Juvenile King Salmon) fishing is as good as it gets right now as long as the wind isn't blowing 35 mph so get out on Puget Sound in area 9 or 10 and get your gear down 100 to 130 ft. Be prepared to release alot of fish as you won't want to go in with your limit too quick having this much fun.

The week of Nov 9th we are averaging 30 fish landed and around 10 keeper size Blackmouth 23 to 28 inches for 4 anglers.

Winter fishing is good

While most people aren't thinking about fishing Puget Sound in Seattle Washington in February, it has been productive and enjoyable every trip out this winter aside from 2 cancellations when it was too windy. It does seem like it's slowing down a little bit but it's still good fishing.
Last Saturday we landed 7 keeper Chinook Salmon (King, Blackmouth) at Possesion Bar near south Whidbey Island Washington.
The avrerage keeper was 24" and 5 or 6 lbs with the largest wieghing in at 9.7 lbs and 29". The slower part is that we only released 4 or 5 fish that were Wild Chinook and had to be released or were undrsize and we would usualy have 10 or 15 releases this time of year. There have been plenty of fillets to bring home and some beautifull scenery to enjoy.

Good Fall Chinook numbers
After  pretty inconsistent start for Coho Salmon (Silvers) it seems like the fish have finally arrived. We are starting to see late runs the last 3 years with the warmer temps and the bulk of the Coho run is showing up around Sept 22nd, about a week late. We are booked until Oct 17th at the time of this posting. The Coho should be heading up river by then but the Winter Kings we call Blackmouth and are generally called Chinook salmon are plentifull and will open October 16th with a 22" size limit. We seem to run into these juvenile Chinook anywhere we are fishing for the Coho now indicating a strong population for our fall and winter fishing this year.

King salmon are showing
The Ling Cod Season was considerably slower than the slam dunk fishing we are used to seeing the last few years. The good news is that Salmon fishing has been very good for Kings and silvers just 30 minutes from our dock in Seattle this last week. Right now I am running trips for catch and release Salmon and bottom fishing combo for Flounder if desired. After July 1st we can keep 2 salmon per person but Kings must be released until July 16th. After July 16th we can keep hatchery Kings until a quota of 6.000 kings is reached in areas 9 and 10. In addition to the 2 Salmon daily limit we can keep 2 Pink salmon per person on top of any other salmon that have been kept for a potential limit of 4 salmon per person. Expect Pink salmon (Humpies) to be around in August.

Plan a fishing trip

BONUS! This summer will have opportunity to keep Adult King Salmon (the BIG ones!) in Marine areas 9 and 10 (most of puget Sound) for the first time in over 10 years!. We will have a limit of 2 salmon per person that includes hatchery kings (release wild King salmon) and an additional 2 Pink Salmon per person for a possible limit of 4 fish per person when the Pinks are in. Most areas open for Salmon July 1st and we will be catching resident Coho Salmon right away. We can start keeping the Kings July 16th until August 15th or until a quota of 8,000 fish is caught. Pink Salmon are usually around August 10th until the 25th or so. May 1st will open for Lingcod. These ugly fish fight hard and taste great!

Winter Blackmouth ends

It was a very good winter for Blackmouth (juvenile King Salmon) and next year will be open Oct 16 until April 30 so plan at least one winter fishing trip if you like King Salmon fishing. For now we will focus on big ugly Lingcod fishing starting May 1st. Just look back in the reports to see some impressive photos of these hard fighting sea monsters.

Same ol good

Same old good fishin' as ten Microsoft clients split on two boats and the winter Blackmouth Salmon (King) keep biting. A few good fish in the box and bunch released on a calm day with a snowy backdrop. So busy I forgot to get action pics.
